Newmarket-on-Fergus maintained their unbeaten run in the Division 3 League when they showed composure and heart to secure a two point victory over an experienced Éire Óg side that contained a number of players that have previously played at senior for the Ennis club.
First half goals from David McNamara and James Freeman left the Blues in front by six points with the half-time whistle edging closer. However despite winning a free in their own half-back line, mouthing on Newmarket’s behalf saw them lose the free with a throw-in being awarded instead, in the subsequent passages of play the sliotar ended up in the back of the net and a pointed effort from Niall O’Connor left only two points between the teams at the break.
Éire Óg continued to put the visitors under pressure once the second half commenced. As time wore on, the anxiety levels increased and crucially at this stage Newmarket were able to up their game having been guilty of fading away and allowing the Townies to cut away at the lead.
All three subs made an impact for Newmarket while Eoin McInerney and Pakie McCormack continued to be rock solid in defence. For their next encounter, John Guilfoyle’s side face Kilmaley and will be looking to improve on their discipline for that game.
Experienced players such as Mark Fitzgerald, Tadhg McNamara and Fergus Flynn were in regular possession for Éire Óg and they certainly have an outfit more than capable of winning the Junior A championship.
