Kilmaley came to Newmarket for the 1st round of the Supermac’s u16A championship.
Captain Stephen Casey opened the scoring with a points from play within the 1st minute. Followed up with an Eoin Guilfoyle points, then came a Kilmaley green flag to edge the visitors ahead. Another point and goal from the visitors saw them into a lead of 2-01 to 0.02 with 8 minutes played but points from Eoin Guilfoyle and Owen McCoy x2, Stephen Casey and Peter Power from 2 frees gave us the lead again. It was a barren spell for Kilmaley for 20 minutes with no score but they scored their 1st point from play in the 27th minute following a point from play. Newmarket took the next 3 points, Power from play and Jack Enright stepped up to slot over from play and a 65. Half time 0-11 to 2-03. 2 points up at half time with probably 70% possession, Newmarket seemed to be going well.
In the second half Points from frees taken by Peter Power x2 were the only points for the blues in 20 minutes with Kilmaley not punishing the Blues indiscipline with 4 wides from frees. Another goal on 20 minutes got the Kilmaley lads closing in again, their defence working hard clearing alot of ball that should have been punished, with 3 minutes left, 4 points down, Kilmaley brought Jack Enright down to concede a penalty, well struck by Power bring the minimum between the teams. Injury time was all that was left and with Eanna Crimmins down and a few lads down with cramp there was to be a few minutes played. Nothing was getting past the Kilmaley defence in the 2 minutes played, the lads were unlucky not to get a free in but these decisions sometimes go against you. The team will learn from this evening, a bit more discipline and tighter marking man to man should stand to them.
Final score Newmarket on Fergus 1-13 Kilmaley 4-05
