Sixmilebridge set the scene for one of the Intermediate semi finals yesterday on a humid day with little breeze.
The 1st half saw Newmaket going in at half time a point behind Clonlara 0-09 to 1-07, with the Clonlara goal coming at an ideal time for them with the final puck of the half saw Kevin McGuinness break through to raise the green flag.
Liam Clancy took 3 points from play and 1 free in the 1st half with Alan McInerney getting 2 from play and Cathal Hayes and Malachy Noonan and Oisin Pender from a free all getting a point a piece and 8 wides also tallied up which proved costly.
In the 2nd half it was all Newmarket scores for the first 10 minutes with Clancy again on target with 3 placed balls and Neil Ryan also taking his point. Clonlara got one back with Ciaran Moriarty on the frees slotting over.Clancy again from play on 15 mins took one back but we then had a drought for 10 minutes with no score until Cathal Finucane broke forward to raise the white flag. James Freeman, John Fehilly Liam Clancy again took their points but we needed a goal and it never came for us, Clonlara did get another goal towards the end of the 2nd half and it ended 2-13 to 0-19 even thought the scoreboard read a 1 point win to Clonlara the ref had 2-13 to 0-19 and Extra time it was.
Clonlara were well on top in extra time taking 3 early frees to go up a goal. James McMahon sprung from the bench to take a point with his first touch of the game and Clancy taking another point from a free. Again just before the 1/2 time break Clonlara got a goal at the vital time to go 3-17 to 0-21 in frand ont. Again Ciaran Moriarty from play and Ronan Carey took their chances. Cathal Hayes did get a goal but it was too late, final score in Extra time Newmarket on Fergus 1-21 to Clonlara 3-19.
Disapointment for John Gulifoyle and his team to loose out in the semi final. Goals win games and Clonlara go their chances at vital times to take the victory, best of luck to them in the Final.
Next outing for the Intermediates will be v’s Inagh Kilnamona in the Championship.
