It may have took them till the second attempt but a dominant Newmarket-on-Fergus got the job done in the Junior B championship quarter-final versus Whitegate on Sunday evening in Bodyke.
Newmarket-on-Fergus 1-10
Whitegate 0-03
Venue: Bodyke
Played on wet, soft underfoot conditions unsurprisingly the contest was a low scoring one with Newmarket creating far more chances than their East Clare opponents.
In the drawn game last weekend it was Whitegate that hit the ground running and the lead they had built up on that occasion the main reason why they could force a draw. However with Newmarket hitting three of the first four scores, they were the side to grab an early grip on proceedings.
Three white flags from Brian Clancy and one each from Paul McInerney and Ger Hannon gave John Hannon’s Newmarket a 0-05 0-02 advantage at the half-time break.
Whitegate were limited to a solitary point in the second half with the Blues gaining control in their defence. At the other end, Clancy was accurate on the frees while Ger Hannon scored his second point of the evening. Connor Clancy rose highest to a delivery from Brian Clancy before turning and tapping home to put the icing on the cake for Newmarket.
A semi-final date for versus Feakle awaits Newmarket next weekend. On this outing, Paul McInerney, PJ Enright, Ger Hannon & Eoin Frawley impressed for the winners.
