Newmarket on Fergus 2-14
Truagh-Clonlara 1-8
Venue: Shannon Camogie Field
On Saturday Newmarket-on-Fergus’ senior camogie team travelled to Shannon to face Truagh-Clonlara who had beaten them in their league meeting earlier this year.
Aine O’Brien was first to register a score hitting a 45 straight between the posts. They added a further point before Truagh-Clonlara raised a white flag. Truagh-Clonlara’s Laura Foley scored the first goal of the match. Then Newmarket scored 2 brilliant goals, first by Zoe McInerney and second Ann Marie Hayes in quick succession which gave Newmarket a five point lead.
Scores in the second half were difficult to secure with both sets of defenders playing superbly, in particular Katie O’Flanagan and Aoife GriffIn for the Blues. Newmarket built on their lead with the three points in a row in the third quarter.
In the last 2 minutes of normal time there was a 21-yard free for Truagh Clonlara which was denied by a glorious save on the goal-line. For Newmarket, Rachel Kelleher and Jenny Kelly did the bulk of the scoring while the two Ireland hockey stars Laura Foley and Roisin Begley did the damage for Truagh-Clonlara.
In the end, Newmarket were hard to beat and hopefully they will prove to be as resilient in the final against Inagh-Kilnamona on Saturday October 14th in Clarecastle.
