Senior hurling

Newmarket on Fergus 2:15 Clonlara 1:11

Having won the competition last year, our seniors got the title defence off to a great start with a comfortable win over Clonlara. The visitors cause was not helped by a red card for their centre back midway through the first half but they battled until the end. To some extent a sequence of five Newmarket wides in the 2nd half stalled our momentum but then a precise pass from Horse found Guilfoyle unmarked and he found the net for a second time.

Junior B Hurling

Meelick 1:12 Newmarket 2:11

An excellent start to the league campaign for John Hannon’s team but it wasn’t looking good at half time when they trailed by 6 points. Cometh the hour however, cometh the man as Smiley delivered two goals. Like a fine wine, he just gets better with age. Oisin Pender was top scorer with 8 points.

Intermediate hurling

Newmarket 4:17   Ogonnelloe 2:9

This was a game played in a bitterly cold wind with frequent squalls of snow. Bad enough weather for intercounty games to be called off but these club men toughed it out regardless.

Ogonnelloe’s best period came in the first quarter but Newmarket took a grip on proceedings from there to the finish.
