Following Clare’s win over Dublin in the relegation play off in Cusack Park all roads led to Clarecastle to get at look at Bob Enright’s team to face Clarecastle in the Senior teams 1st outing in the Clare Cup v neighbours Clarecastle.

Noel Frawley opened the scoring for the Blues under a minute with a point from play. Colin Ryan opened his account after 2 minutes from a placed ball. Cian McNamara opened Clarecastle scoring with a point with Jonathan Clancy leveling the score next. Colin Guilfoyle’s point from play was cancelled out with a placed ball from Bobby Duggan for the Magpies.

Eoin Hayes takes Newmarket’s next point from play after 8 minutes followed by poinTs from Shane O’Brien and Ronan Good from midfield. Frawley again pointed from play with Newmarket on top Colin comes up with a green flag followed by a pointed free. With the aid of a strong breeze Newmarket needed to get a good lead ahead in the 1st half. Clarecastle got a point back from Mc Namara soon to be cancelled out by Shane O’Brien. Bobby Duggan knocked over another point from play for Clarecastle’s final score of the 1st half but is cancelled out by Seán O’Connor. Noel Frawley pointed from play with the final 2 Blues points from Colin Ryan from placed balls. 1-14 to 0-04 at half time.

After a few wides in the opening minutes of the 2nd half Clarecastle took the first point from Jonathan Clancy. Both sides had wides with the wind causing the sliotar to drift narrowly wide at both ends. Mikey McInerney and Bobby Duggan exchanged points, another Colin Ryan free, Duggan free and Colin again saw 3 more white flags. Colin Gulifoyle closed the Blues tally of 1-19 to Clarecastle 0-10.

An overall satisfactory performance from the team with the lead in the 1st half giving them a good cushion to work with. A good opening performance and win for the opening game of the Clare Cup. Only for a few fine saves from the Clarecastle goalkeeper, there could have been a few more green flags. Very solid performance from the Blues with Colin Ryan scoring 1-09 of the total 1-19.
