Last Monday evening, saw our senior girls play their final match of the Division 1 league against Clooney-Quin and win on a score line of 3-12 to 2-08.
Throw in was late at 8 pm, but thankfully we have the longer summer evenings for the next few months to help accommodate all our camogie and hurling fixtures. Clooney-Quin were first off the mark with a goal from Marie Halpin and a point from a free taken by Orlaith Duggan. Newmarket answered with a good point from Jenny Kelly and Rachel Kelleher added a further point from a free. Newmarket mounted an attack on the Clooney-Quin goal and after 2 excellent saves from their goalie, Marie Keating, Newmarket’s Jenny Kelly eventually found the back of the net to put Newmarket ahead, where they stayed for the remainder of the match. Both sides exchanged a few more points until a great goal from Zoe McInerney. Then just before half-time Jenny Kelly and Sharon McMahon pointed from play and Clooney-Quin’s Orlaith Duggan scored a point from a free, which left the half-time score line at 2-08 to 1-05.
Within minutes of half time starting Newmarket had added 2 more points, one from a 45 taken by Rachel Kelleher and a superb pass from Kate Clancy to Zoe McInenery to put it over the bar. Kate went on to score her own point soon afterwards. Newmarket at this point looked comfortable in the lead, especially after Rachel Kelleher kicked the ball home for a third goal. It wasn’t until 17 minutes into the second half before Clooney-Quin scored when Orlaith Duggan took a free which resulted in a goal. This spurred her team on and they managed to add a few more points before the full-time whistle blew.
Well done to all the girls and their management team on good league campaign. Its onwards and upwards for the next campaign.
